Asbestos in Schools & System-Built Classrooms.

The Department for Education estimates most schools built before 2000 contain asbestos, much of it in system-built blocks assembled at speed in the 1950s to 1970s.

Where it sits

AIB ceiling tiles and panels, column casings in CLASP-type frames, lab benches and fume cupboards, pipe lagging in boiler houses, sprayed coatings in halls and window boards in every classroom.

The duty to manage

Schools must hold an asbestos register, assess and manage the risk, and share the information with anyone who might disturb the fabric, from caretakers to contractors. We build and maintain registers and re-inspection programmes for schools and academy trusts.

Removal around the school year

Licensed removal in schools is planned around holidays and delivered by DBS-checked teams, with independent four-stage clearance before anyone returns, as we did at St Mary’s West Derby Primary and Cardinal Newman High School.
