Fire doors made before the 1980s often achieved their rating with an AIB core, invisible until the door is drilled, planed or damaged.

Where you'll find them

Flats and HMO entrance doors, school and office corridors, plant room doors and service riser panels, anywhere a 30 or 60 minute rating was needed before modern cores existed.

The risk

The core is sealed inside the door leaf, so an intact door is low risk. Fitting new locks, letterboxes or closers, trimming to fit carpets, or fire-door upgrade programmes are where fibres get released.

Removal and cost

Doors are usually removed whole and double-wrapped rather than stripped, priced per door and often combined with fitting certified modern replacements, so the building stays compliant on fire as well as asbestos.
